  • My yoga teaching

I teach Vinyasa Flow Yoga; my classes flow with the breath and include elements of the Ashtanga Primary series. I focus on different asanas (or postures) each week to add variety, and I want you to leave a class feeling strengthened, challenged, balanced and restored. Those new to yoga are very welcome to come to any class as I give modifications for every posture. I am very happy to teach pregnant women in my general classes but would encourage women to contact me to discuss their needs.

I also offer live online classes and recordings which have been a useful extension and continue to be popular as attendees can practise yoga from home or holiday.

I am so lucky, the people I teach are lovely so the groups are always welcoming and fun, so you are very welcome to come along to a class to try it out.

    About me

I started practising Ashtanga Yoga at ‘On the Mat’ with Celeste Lau in 2000 when I lived in Singapore.
I completed the Ashtanga Yoga Glastonbury Teacher Training 200 hour Diploma course, accredited by Yoga Alliance Professionals taught by Jane Piddington in 2016.
I extended my teaching qualifications with a Pregnancy Yoga Teacher Training course with Bristol City Yoga in 2018. Previously I qualified with the National Childbirth Trust as an antenatal teacher in 1999 and worked as a teacher and as a doula in Singapore. I have already had a number of pregnant women attending my yoga classes and it is great to be able to confidently support them in their practise, although at the moment I do not run any specific pregnancy yoga classes.

Since qualifying to teach yoga I have taught continuously, including teaching at Sherborne Sports Centre (2016 - 2024). l currently teach in a number of local village halls, weekly and monthly in varying formats and also run private classes.

I continue to attend classes myself with Jane Piddington, and have attended workshops with Gregor Maehle, David Keil, David Swenson,Lucy Crawford and Scott Johnson as part of my continual professional development.

So, that is me, practising, teaching and studying yoga with great enjoyment and fulfilment

I started doing Kate's classes while pregnant and found them so beneficial. Kate was so professional at all times - emailing me every week ahead of the class to let me know which positions I could
and couldn't do and always made me feel completely included in the class, even at 40 weeks pregnant. Since having my son I am now enjoying her classes again with the added benefit of trying some of the positions I couldn't before. I love her classes and find them relaxing and challenging. I can not recommend her highly enough.

Kate’s classes are friendly and welcoming, and her calm, clear directions encourage everyone to be challenged, whilst offering options to suit differing needs. Her classes always flow in a peaceful, focussed atmosphere, and provide a genuine haven to escape the routines of each day for a while. I always leave feeling that I have worked hard, but safely within my own capabilities, and refreshed and relaxed ready to continue the day.

I have always struggled to enjoy yoga, I've done classes off and on since university but I have never found it beneficial, until this class. I love this class, it has become one of the best parts of my week. Though it never feels rushed I come out of each class feeling stretched and challenged. Recently I completed my first ever sprint triathlon and this class was a key part of my training, it helped me to look after my tight over-used muscles and gave me the time to reflect on areas of my body that needed extra support or training. I can't recommend this class enough, it's the best thing I do for my mind and body all week.

Newly retired and keen to keep my physical/sporting activities going I decided to try yoga. Kate’s calm, patient and supportive approach instantly reassured me that as a total novice, I would be encouraged to develop my yoga knowledge techniques and level of enjoyment, at my own rate. I have played various sports throughout my life – but my very first yoga class demonstrated to me how limited my flexibility had become and what a challenge this was going to be. I am very pleased that, with Kate’s support and encouragement, this will be a worthwhile and rewarding journey and help keep me moving into old age.

I have been attending Kate Whittell's Saturday class since March, having practiced Yoga for some years with different teachers.
I have enjoyed Kate's sessions following her clear and calm guidance through the postures, her use of language is so well formulated that partially sighted people would find the sessions accessible.
Kate's postures that she demonstrates are those of a dedicated Yoga practitioner; the tempo and breathing guidance is enormously helpful. I particularly like the themes that are explored which we follow, they give shape and understanding to the sessions. Kate's warmth and humanity makes her approachable and open to adaptations with some humour in true Yogic tradition.

I have been attending Kate's yoga classes for over 2 years and the Saturday class is an excellent way to start the weekend! I like the way each class is a targeted session, i.e. core, shoulders, abs, etc. This provides an excellent focus and structure each time. Kate's instruction makes the class accessible to every range of ability - explaining the aim of each asana, guiding the class as she does each one herself and always offering A, B & C versions when available. I would recommend Kate's classes to everyone, but especially men who play sport as the all-round conditioning is excellent for injury-prevention.

Thank you again for introducing me to yoga as it was one exercise I did not think I could be excited about, but I was wrong. No doubt the teacher had something to do with this.

I've never been very supple and so was quite nervous of giving yoga a try. I needn't have worried. Kate is an amazing teacher. Her calming voice talks us through her class, talking us through the yoga flow of postures and breathing, offering alternative postures for those of us that find some postures slightly challenging! Her class has become a weekly must, and I leave with a feeling of total calm.

I thoroughly enjoy the last part of this class, the relaxation bit, because Kate encourages you to stretch to your full capability without pushing too hard. You really feel your body has essentially worked out to the maximum. Her gentle encouragement given with poise and grace calms the class which is a haven from a busy lifestyle.
